Advice on purchasing hand tools

When shopping for garden tools, always try and buy good quality hand tools, this ensures that they will last the test of time and last for many years. Always purchase hand tools and garden tools independently rather than allow someone else to purchase them for you. It is really important to select the right height of certain tools such as spades and any spade mustn’t be too long or too short in order to avoid unnecessary bending and stretching. Always select tools that have a good solid handle and hand tools made from stainless steel glide through the soil easily and are very easy to clean.

Although spades should absolutely be the correct height, it is also important to select spades that are a good length if you are going to be moving lots of soil as the extra length will help distribute the weight of the soil.  Spades with a wooden and plastic handle are comfortable for the user and will help alleviate any damage to the hands.

Always remember that there are different types of spades that are used for different tasks, some spades are great for digging whilst others are more apt at moving and transferring soil, always ensure you select the correct one for the task you are doing.

Hand tools come in a wide range of styles, colours and designs but again the most important aspect is to select hand tools that are of a good quality. Always pay special attention to the handle connection and ensure that it is firm.

Planters are tools that are incredibly handy for planting bulbs and will certainly help reduce the amount of bending and thus helping alleviate stress and strain to the back.  There are many different types of planters and in general you get what you pay for and selecting a good quality one, will ensure it lasts the test of time.

Hand tools used for weeding and turning over soil are available in so many styles and varieties, you certainly won’t be stuck for choice.  Always select good quality hand tools and brightly coloured ones to ensure they can be found again when left out in the garden

Another good piece of advice is to keep all small hand tools together, either in a wrap around holder or a tool box where they can be located easily. Many hand tools are disposed of every year because they have been left out in the rain and are rendered useless. Other hand tools have simply got lost and are found years later in some obscure place where we left them. Money and time can be saved by purchasing good quality tools, cleaning and storing them correctly.
