Pro Tools Guitar Input
Sound system planning for multiple bands?
Basically what do I need to plan for to say have a battle of the bands play and have around 5 different rock bands play with 1-2 guitarists and a vocalist possibly. I have a large PA and sound board with 16 mic inputs plus a interface I can use with Pro Tools 9 with 8 inputs. How should I plan to setup the stage? All the guitar amps onstage already with say 4 of them with mics and then switch the mics while a band is playing for the next?
If I were doing it, I would first invite all the bands there one at a time to experience the live sound setup and actually practice with it and I would record their practice sessions and play it back for them. If you do not own the auditorium, that might be difficult and expensive to do. You see, I would not want them to play through their guitar amplifiers at all unless those amplifiers were able to output directly to a power amplification system in which case they could setup normally and I would plug them into the sound system through a mixer. For guitar/bass amplifiers that were unable to directly connect to the main sound system, I would have them first connect to whatever effects loops or processors they normally use or if they did not have effects loops or effects processors, then I would have them get familiar with and connect them to a BOSS GT-10 for guitars and BOSS GT-10B for bass and connect those systems to the 16 channel mixer that would be the gateway to the sound system. I would definitely record all the bands and sell the recording to audience members and pay a performance royalty back to the bands to offset their entrance fee. Each band would receive a master CD of their bands performance and a copy of that CD for each band member so that they could continue to sell that CD. I would even arrange to have that CD marketed for them through Tunecore across the internet if they chose to do so. All bands would have to sign a licensing agreement that stated that all copyrighted material and performance rights belonged exclusively to the band but that a production royalty was payable to my organization for having produced the recording for them. The good bands, I would continue to work with and I would attempt to marry them with songwriter’s and singers and other band members that I was also working with to help them become a better more marketable entity. In short I would become a full service modern day record label that operated out of a studio/performance theater environment and no band would ever be charged for studio time. All of our services would be paid out of the proceeds from local performances including battles of bands and showcases for bands as well as royalties received from all recordings of all bands and subsequent tours that were arranged and provided as part of our full service package. It would be a Total Win-Win Record label that did not exploit any individual or group talent sources but allowed them to succeed by providing the perfect platform from which they might be able launch successful careers. I would even become their local manager for booking local gigs. I would get them local radio play time and interviews on local radio and TV stations. Even album signing sessions could be performed at all local record stores that sold records produced on my label. If you are going to do a battle of the bands, the stage setup is the last thing you should be concerned about. Think BIG! Help those talented people launch a music career and reap the rewards from that instead!
