Choosing The Lifetime Of A High Visibility Vest

Among the most vital tools in a construction worker’s arsenal is his high-visibility safety vest. They are his best friend when conditions are against him, whether it’s because he’s along a highway, working at night, or in the rain (in which case safety rain gear is an excellent tool.) These tools provide workers with the one thing that is invaluable on a construction site: visibility. These high-visibility vests must meet specific criteria put forth by the FHWA. Specifically, they must be ANSI Class 2 or 3 vests. Everyone working near the highway or construction equipment must wear one, not just the workers themselves, but also surveyors, foremen, engineers, and anyone else present on site.

Damage Over Time

Because of their daily usage and the environment of a construction zone, these safety vests can undergo a lot of damage. This damage doesn’t even need to be from just one incident. Wear and tear accumulated over a period of time can show visible problems with safety vests. They must be visible at 1000 feet, and should safety vests become too damaged, soiled, torn, or defaced, to meet this requirement, they must be replaced.

Color And Reflectivity

There are a few key things one should look for in deciding whether or not a vest needs to be replaced. Of course vests are bound to get dirty and a little worn (it’s construction after all), but they still need to have high levels of contrast, bright colors, and high reflectivity. They also need to be visible from 1000 feet away. When vests aren’t visible from this distance, the reflectivity is low, and the colors are faded and not distinctive, they’ve reached the point where replacement is necessary. This rule is important for other gear as well, such as reflective cones and safety rain gear.

Replacement

It’s actually not hard at all to replaced a damaged vest, and there are only a few steps. The first is to notify a supervisor. This supervisor is in charge of making sure you get the correct vest in place of the old one, so he or she will need a little information first. This information includes what job the vest was for, since they can vary by job or occupation, the local laws surrounding safety vests, and whether the vest was Class 2 or Class 3.

Once the old vest has been replaced, it’s important to cut up the old one so it cannot be reused by someone who doesn’t know it’s out of commission. Once it’s been properly disposed of, the process is complete.

Average Lifetime

There are also other factors that can contribute to increased rate of wear on safety vests, but the average time is around six months. Vests worn at higher elevations or in hotter climates are more prone to damage. In addition, the actual type of work done while wearing these vests can lead to dirtier, more worn vests, and how often vests are cleaned and how they are stored also play a big part.

It’s not very smart to wear a safety vest if it isn’t functional because after all, these vests, safety rain gear, and other safety tools are meant to be super visible. If they aren’t visible, then they aren’t protecting anyone. If there’s any doubt whether safety clothing is done or not, just go ahead and replace it.
