The goal when buying any power tool is find one that does the job. For instance, a small 7-volt cordless screwdriver will handle just about any task around the house. On the other hand, if you do professional, heavy-duty work then a cordless impact driver will be far more suitable for you. Here are a few types of cordless drills.
Cordless drills/drivers will satisfy the demands of most homeowners. They are the most popular, as they have the ability to drive screws and drill holes. The clutch can be adjusted to change the amount of torque applied to a task. The type of work you do depends on the amount of power to get. 18-volts is probably enough for anyone, but most probably can get away with 12-14 volts.
A cordless hammer drill is suited for professional work that involves drilling masonry. They are more expensive, but also contain quite a bit more power. A special clutch setting allows it to be used as as hammer for certain jobs. While a homeowner would likely have no reason to use this feature, it can still be used as a normal drill/driver.
Another type of cordless drill is the impact driver. This is designed for professionals who drive a lot of screws. The impact driver is able to increase torque when facing resistance, and doing so also helps keep the bit secured into the chuck. Some jobs that would require this drill include furniture assembly and building decks.
Cordless screwdrivers utilize hex-shank bits, and more compact and lightweight compared to others. They are easy to handle and small enough to fit into even the tightest spots. While bigger and better seems like the way to go, many times all you will need is a cordless screwdriver for work around the house. They work for 1/4 inch holes and driving small screws. Cordless screwdrivers are advantageous because they have a reverse option. A manual screwdriver may not be enough to remove a screw in some cases.
A cordless drill is best if you aren’t doing any professional or heavy-duty work. Otherwise, a impact driver or hammer drill is a better solution, as they are more powerful and get the job done faster. A typical cordless drill kit will include batteries, a charger, a box, and even some bits depending on the package.
The best brand is DeWalt, though Bosch and Makita are two others to consider. Pay attention to the warranty that comes with when buying.
