An auto mechanic spills 84mL of 2.3 M H2SO4 solution from a rebuilt auto battery. How many milliliters of 1.8 M NaHCO3 must be poured on the spill to react completely with the sulfuric acid?

If you write the reaction between sulfuric acid and sodium carbonate:

H2SO4 + 2NaHCO3 -> Na2SO4 + 2H2CO3

you can see that 1 moll of H2SO4 needs to react with 2 molls of NaHCO3 in order to be totally neutralized.

2.3M H2SO4 means the spilled solution of sulfuric acid contains 2.3 molls of acid per liter of solution or in 1000 mL.

So, the 84 mL contain 2.3 * 84 /1000 = 0.1932 molls of H2SO4

If 1 moll of H2SO4 needs to react with 2 molls of NaHCO3, than
0.1932 molls of H2SO4 needs to react with 0.3864 molls of NaHCO3.

The sodium carbonate solution has a concentration of 1.8M or 1.8 molls per litter.

So, if 1000 mL of carbonate soluiton contains 1.8 molls, than
the 0.3864 molls you need will be contained in 0.3864*1000/1.8 = aprox. 214.67mL.

And that is the volume that you are looking for: you need cca. 214.67 mL of 1.8M NaHCO3 to completely react the spilled H2SO4.
